OUR PERSPECTIVE

Macarena lends an urban femininity to the traditional Spanish tapas dining experience, all in the heart of downtown Palo Alto. Alexa Nafisi of Adean Studios transformed the former Michelin Guide recognized Bird Dog space into an ode to the Spanish dancer Macarena and all of the seductive and mysterious qualities she embodies. Inspired by camerinos, the feminine vanity areas found in theatrical dressing rooms, Adean set out to bring old world charm and elegance to the restaurant’s interior. With a deep appreciation for classical architectural forms and elements of crown molding and V groove mirrored paneled cabinets, Adean softened the design with wavy lines, fringes and curves. Elements drawn from the famous San Sebastián born sculptor Eduardo Chillida bring modern clean lines and a subtle masculinity to the otherwise feminine-driven space. Low level accent lighting and lush plants provide warmth and verdant shelter, creating a natural landscape juxtaposed with the building’s concrete structural elements. Guests are greeted by an intimate bar leading into the main dining room reminiscent of a casual, yet lively bistro complete with velvet banquettes. An open kitchen and classic jamón cutting station provide another focal point, emitting an energy that’s innate to Spanish culture.
